November is Diabetes Awareness Month—a time to highlight the importance of diabetes education, prevention, and support for those affected by this challenging condition. Louisiana Cardiovascular & Thoracic Institute (LACVT) and Diabetes Relief of Louisiana are proud to join the Alexandria Lions Club in their mission to raise awareness and funds for diabetes through the
2nd Annual Strides for Diabetes Awareness 5K & Family Fun Run, which took place this past Saturday in Alexandria, LA. As a team devoted to improving the lives of those affected by diabetes, we were honored to participate in this inspiring community event for the second year in a row.
This year, the event was particularly special, as one of our own team members, Jalisa Lefear, secured 3rd place in her division! Jalisa, who is a type 2 diabetic herself, is an inspiration to all of us. Her achievement exemplifies the resilience and determination it takes to manage diabetes and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. We’re so proud of her accomplishment and grateful for her contributions to our team. Jalisa’s story is a testament to the strength of those living with diabetes and the positive impact that supportive communities and proactive health choices can have.
The Strides for Diabetes Awareness 5K & Family Fun Run, organized by the Alexandria Lions Club, is part of the global effort led by Lions Clubs International to combat the growing prevalence of diabetes. With the international health community predicting that diabetes will affect 380 million people by 2025, these Strides events are a powerful way to educate communities, foster engagement, and raise funds for crucial diabetes research and support initiatives.
Proceeds from the Alexandria event are directed toward impactful programs, including the Louisiana Lions Camp in Anacoco. This camp offers children aged 6 to 14 living with Type 1 diabetes a safe and supervised environment where they can enjoy recreational activities, learn more about their condition, and connect with others facing similar challenges. The funds raised
will also benefit Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) and the American Diabetes Association, helping to advance research, education, and advocacy for all those affected by diabetes.
At LACVT and Diabetes Relief of Louisiana, our mission extends beyond the clinic walls. We are dedicated to supporting our community and those managing diabetes through events like the Strides for Diabetes Awareness 5K & Family Fun Run. Our team provides advanced care in diabetes management and cardiovascular health, and we believe that by joining hands with the community, we can work toward a future free from the burdens of diabetes. During this Diabetes Awareness Month, we encourage everyone to join us in supporting diabetes education, prevention, and treatment initiatives. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of our community, one step at a time.
